Speaking Part 1 – Sport

In this post, you will see one of the most common IELTS speaking topics (sports) and sample answers.

Please remember that in the actual test you should give honest answers and talk about your own experiences, thoughts, feelings and opinions. Do not try to memorise answers, as the examiners will probably be able to guess and you will lose marks.

However, you are able to make up information to extend your answers, but be sure that you are confident when speaking about the chosen topic and that it is believable.

TIP >> Each answer should be at least 2-3 sentences long.

TIP >> Listen carefully to the question so that you answer in the correct tense.

TIP >> When answering a yes/no question – answer then give your reasons for your answer. You must extend your answer to gain more marks.

TIP >> Just relax and think of it as a regular conversation you are having, make eye contact and be positive.

Take a look at the questions and sample answers below on the topic of ‘sports‘ >>

Q: Do you like swimming?

A: I really love to go swimming, especially in the sea on a hot day. There are so many great places for swimming where I live, that it is easy to go every day in the summer months.

Q: How often do you swim?

A: I try to go swimming every day or at least three times per week. This allows me to do some exercise in the water which is good for my overall health.

Q: Do you like to go swimming on holiday?

A: I used to before I moved to a Greek island. Now it is normal behaviour to go swimming in the summer months nearly every day. I prefer to swim in the sea, rather than the pool as it is cleaner. There are clear, crisp waters in beautiful surroundings close to our house, which can be easily accessed by car.

Q: Should everyone learn swimming? Why?

A: I think it is a good skill to have, as not only can it benefit your health and overall fitness levels, it can also be a safety skill. Knowing how to swim is important, in case of accidents in water – it could save your life. People should learn when they are young, for enjoyment and for health.

Q: What activities would you do if you were spending some leisure time at a beach or near the ocean?

A: If I was at the beach I would play volleyball, go swimming and perhaps hire a jet ski. Travelling through the waters on a jet ski is a lot of fun and a good way to explore caves, coves and small bays.

Q: Why do some people like water sports?

A: Some people love to be in the ocean and get an adrenaline rush from water skiing, jet ski and surfing. Watersports attract people who like a challenge, an adventure and something that gives them an exhilarating outdoor experience.

Q: Do you think the government should invest money in developing facilities for water sports?

A: In my opinion, the government should put more funding into health care and education first before committing expenses to watersports. On the other hand, programs could be implemented to develop areas for water sports, which could involve the community and provide new experiences.

Q: What sports do you like? (Why?)

A: I used to enjoy classes like Zumba and body combat but now really enjoy swimming and running. Swimming and running are great ways to stay fit as they allow me to experience nature, as well as exercise.

Q: What sports are most popular in your country?

A: In the country, I currently live in, football and volleyball are really popular. There are many local football teams and volleyball tournaments are held once a month in the summer season.

Q: Are boys and girls good at the same sports?

A: I think boys seem more passionate about certain sports like football and rugby, but that doesn’t necessarily mean that they are better than girls. If a person is dedicated to a sport and has the skills needed to be a success, I don’t think it matters if they are a boy or a girl.

Q: What sports do children prefer?

A: Children like any activities that involve running around and using up their energy. They like sports involving balls, like football, rounders and netball. They also like swimming, playing in the water and being outdoors.

Q: Do you like to do daily exercise? (Why?/Why not?)

A: I exercise every day for at least thirty minutes, this includes walking, swimming or running. In my view, it is important to maintain a healthy lifestyle, by exercising and moving the body as much as possible. This can help you to clear your mind and stay positive.
