Nouns are parts of speech that are used to name a person, animal, place, thing, or abstract idea. One unique feature of many languages, including English, is that they often ascribe gender to nouns. However, English mostly uses neutral gender nouns compared to languages like French, Spanish, German, etc. which have a more rigorous system for gendering nouns.
In this guide, we will explore different types of genders in English, and some general rules in French, Spanish, and German, but please note this is not exhaustive, especially for non-English languages.
English Gender of Nouns
In English, there are four genders of nouns:
- Masculine: This gender is used for nouns that denote male beings. Example: Man, Boy, King.
- Feminine: This gender is used for nouns that denote female beings. Example: Woman, Girl, Queen.
- Neuter: This gender is used for nouns that denote things without life or not having sex. Example: Table, Book, Tree.
- Common: This gender is used for one noun that can be both masculine and feminine. Example: Student, Teacher, Friend.
Please note that most nouns in English are gender-neutral.
