IELTS Reading Passage: Seeing the future in with video conferencing

Seeing the future in with video conferencing.

A. Video conferencing(or video teleconferencing-VTC) as a signifies of verbal exchange intra- and inter- business has really been feasible since the daybreak of television. But the early systems, initially revealed in 1968, were actually so excessive costly and of such wretched picture quality that they were not workable requests for common public use.

B. Nevertheless, in the 1980’s ,cellular phone networks like ISDN establish to multiply, so that by the 1990’s the reduction in cost brought the apparatus obligatory for video-conferencing within the reach of the pile. The 1990s also saw the arrival of IP(Internet Protocol) based video-conferencing with further adequate video contraction automation being initiated, thus allowing personal computer(PC)- based video-conferencing. VTC had come on the site in a big way as complimentary, web extension and software, such as NetMeeting, and MSN Messenger, Skype, and others brought cheap, albeit average, VTC to the public at large.

C.Video-conferencing has been belittled for the absence of eye-contact that can influence the effectiveness of the medium and for the fact that contributors can be camera conscious. But these hurdles are not insuperable. The size of modern television together with the wide advance in picture quality as a result of the arrival of the automated age had enriched the capability of the latest video-conferencing apparatus, going rather in the direction of solving the former issues. Early studies by Alphonse Chapanis establish that the addition of video hampers instead of upgrading connection. However, as with video and sound recording of conferences, interviews etc, consciousness of the attendance of the mechanization declines with time to the point that its presence is not felt. An advanced disadvantage common to all automation is the constant chance of technical complications. But in conclusion, video-conferencing is equal to an electronic device like a PC or a telephone and so in time, any issues will be better.

D. Discussing by video has enriched the performance of various companies via its ability and success, saving both time and economy for businesses and, in this carbon- conscious age, by the depletion in the habitat cost of business travel from one place of the world to another. These aside, video-conferencing has a proximity that is tough to dare. It is now crucial in any work state where companies with workers on various sites or in various parts of the world can communicate with each other quickly. Similar to a telephone line forever fixed it is easy to dial  up a colleague  seconds anywhere in the global.

E. And what about the apparatus? The apparatus for video-conferencing is proportionally effortless to use. It has, actually, been ordinary in the news media for a number of years as companies have transmitted live from the back of a rig or van in news hotspots around the world.  Two ISDN lines are required at each location: one for video output and the other one for the video input; an excellent camera with all-around mic or  mic which can be held in the hand, clipped on, or central is needed; and for data transmission, a LAN is also required. And, without any  doubt, a television screen at each end is crucial.

F. The future use of video-conferencing in the academic field has still to be completely oppressed. In this day and age when educational institutions are assumed to be more profit-conscious and much more pliable, video-conferencing could be engaged to take business into the academic field and conversely. The system can also be used to take skills all over in the world. It is no longer mandatory for specialists to travel wide distances for meetings or to educate. In some areas, say isolated islands like the Outer Hebrides in Scotland or the Cape Verde Island off West Africa, where it may be tough to find educators in  expert subjects like languages, video-conferencing is an ideal way to bring schooling within the reach of each person. Video-conferencing is  certainly nor a cure-all for every issue, not an end in itself, but a useful implement that can accompany instead of substitute existent tutoring methods.

G.Similar to the electronic or interactive whiteboard(IWB), whose initiation in the classroom has met with opposition to, video-conferencing may take some time to become important , if ever. But, maybe with the mounting concern about our impurity, the habitat will eventually be the great stimulus. A sobering thought is if classrooms and offices of the following will be composed solely of TV screens.
