Your new neighbours have recently invited you to a party: Semi-Formal Letter [IELTS General Writing Task 1 ]

You should spend about 20 minutes on this task.

Your new neighbours have recently invited you to a party they are holding next Saturday. However, you have other plans on Saturday evening and cannot attend the party.

Write a letter to your neighbours. In your letter:

  • thank them for the invitation
  • mention what plans you already have
  • suggest when you can meet them

Write at least 150 words.

You do NOT need to write any addresses.

Begin your letter as follows:

Dear Mr and Mrs ……………,

Answer 1:

Dear Mr and Mrs. Thompson,

I hope this note finds you well. I was truly delighted to receive your invitation for the party next Saturday. It’s such a warm gesture, especially since we’ve only recently become neighbours.

Unfortunately, I had made prior arrangements for that evening. A dear friend of mine is celebrating their 50th birthday, and I have committed to attending their special gathering out of town.

However, I would love to get to know both of you better. Perhaps we could arrange a coffee or lunch sometime the following week? It would be a great opportunity for us to spend some time and share stories.

Thank you once again for your kind invitation. I’m truly looking forward to getting to know you both better soon.

Warm regards,
Hannah Brown.

Answer 2:

Dear Mr and Mrs. Patel,

Firstly, I want to express my heartfelt thanks for inviting me to your party next Saturday. It’s truly heartwarming to have such welcoming neighbours.

Regrettably, I had previously planned an event that same evening. I’ve enrolled in a painting workshop that I’ve been eagerly waiting for and cannot miss.

However, I’m eager to get acquainted and spend quality time with you. Would you be available for a brunch or evening tea the next Sunday? I believe it would be a perfect opportunity for us to bond and learn more about each other.

Thank you once again for considering me. I genuinely hope we can find another time soon to celebrate and chat.

Best wishes,
Daniel Clark.
